Sound Off

Mya knew from the first time she saw Dale that he was the one for her. Their relationship and the house he bought her were the envy of her friends. Now, ten years later, they have three great children but the life has been sucked out of their marriage. They don't spend enough time together. The house is always in need of renovation but little ever gets done. Money is tighter than tight. The sparks have left the relationship. It's their tenth anniversary, and Dale doesn't even give her an 'I love you' before he leaves for work. Divorce is looking like the only option to Mya. Is there any chance for them to revive their relationship? Or, like the house, is it seemingly in such disrepair that it would be easier to simply cut their losses and go their own ways?

Sound Off is a well-written novella that proves all relationships need work. If not nurtured, then like a plant they wither and die. Sound Off is told from Mya's point of view, with her feelings and experiences being at the core of the story. This is a poignant tale that will bring a tear to your eye, for when a couple who were at first so in love teeter on the brink of divorce, what does it say for everyone else's chances? Mya in particular is a fairly developed character, and though not overly much is known about the other characters this seems suitable, since it is Mya's despair that is the foundation of the story. The plot flows fairly smoothly, though the tale is not entirely unpredictable. There is a sex scene, which is described, though not graphically. If you have ever found yourself in Mya's shoes, or if you can sympathize, then this would make a great quick read for you. I enjoy Penny Dawn's writing style, and will undoubtedly keep an eye out for more of her tales.
