The Wedding Dress: Something Borrowed, Something Blue
Azure Kerr has never been so drawn to anyone in all her life as she is to Gavin Connor. Yet she is at first resistant to going out with him. She doesn't know him, and their first meeting was somewhat unusual, though highly humorous. The poor man was dancing on the spot in need of relieving himself – quite literally. That he then turns up at her place of business three days later without her even having revealed her name is rather impressive, yet at first his persistence gets him nowhere. The family pack of Charmin toilet paper certainly had everyone's eyes focused on them in curiosity, but it was not the toilet rolls that snared Azure. Rather, he promised he could gain her admittance to a viewing of Rossi's Gardens, which she had been trying to do for months without success. A deal was struck: she would meet him for a drink, if he could arrange for a viewing. Turns out, his sister owns the place! The cheat! Ah well, a deal's a deal. But why does their meeting feel more like a date to Azure, even though she insists to herself and anyone else who'll listen that it is just business? Is this a case of the lady doth protest too much?
Following a bad experience with his ex-wife, Gavin never intended to get involved with another woman beyond a temporary and emotionally barren fling. Yet, when he meets Azure – under most embarrassing circumstances – he feels like he has been hit over the head with a two-by-four. He cannot stay away. Indeed, he doesn't even try. The race difference doesn't bother him a whit. To him, Azure is a gorgeous, intelligent, professional woman and he is not going to let her slip away. The attraction between them is unlike anything he has ever felt, and whilst he has no intention of marrying, he realizes he is falling in love. He succumbs gracefully and wants a commitment from Azure; a commitment that falls short of marriage. Living together, maybe? But when Azure finds her dream wedding dress, an aged plum colored affair steeped in history, it hits home just how much Azure wants to get married. When she seems unconcerned over his reticence, indeed goes so far as to suggest she might marry someone else, the green monster rears its head. What will it take for Gavin to overcome his fears of marriage? Jealousy? Disappointment? Possessiveness? Or something else entirely?
Something Borrowed, Something Blue had me hooked from the very first word, laughing all the way. The storyline grabbed at me and refused to let me go until I had read all there was to read. Even then, the plot continued to dwell in my head and draw forth a chuckle. The entire story has been beautifully crafted by Lena Matthews, and had I not already been a fan of hers, I most assuredly would have been upon reading this delectable novella. These characters have been fabulously developed, and the attraction between them is staggeringly tangible, as well as being the glue that holds the story together. Azure is a strong woman, a professional wedding planner who is co-owner of her own business. Gavin is a persistent man who goes after what he wants, though falters due to a previous bad experience. Together, these characters are electric and very believable. Secondary characters are also fabulous and well developed. Sex between the characters is described in brilliant detail, and you will not be left disappointed. This is my first of this series, but the history of the wedding dress has snared me and I now desire to read the other tales in The Wedding Dress series. It goes without saying that I definitely need to grab a hold of more from Lena Matthews – ASAP!
