Jenny is dying of cancer. She hangs on through the pain, though, and past the point the doctors claimed she'd die for one reason: her three beloved cats. All her other animals have gone, one by one as her illness progressed. Only her cats remain, but she cannot bear for them to go to a shelter. Yet, they now reveal themselves to her as something else. What is it they want her to do?

Watch Over Me is a poignant short story about a woman's suffering and dying in what should have been the prime of her life, with only her cats for company. Her emotions are detailed fairly well: her pain, her need to hang on for her pets, her sadness that her other pets are now long gone, her determination not to see her cats go to an animal shelter. M.K. Wintersong has written a short tale that is sure to involve your emotions, even whilst you don't know where the story is going. A good read, though not for everyone, and suited to anyone who has ever thought there is something more to their pet than meets the eye.
