Last Resort

Emma Trent has just landed her dream job. Masseuse work is hard to come by, let alone on an exotic island with phenomenal pay. So she has to leave within two hours. So she doesn’t know all the details about the position. And her family’s concern is understandable, but this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Besides, there’s surely no need to worry, right? Until she gets there and notices right off something isn’t quite right. But no one could have prepared her to find out the resort caters to vampires. Neither could Emma have foreseen that the owner of the resort is the man of her dreams. Literally.

Alex Masters has long wanted to create a place where his kind could enjoy themselves in the sun. A never-to-be-fulfilled daydream, his kind would have said. Yet Alex has made the impossible…possible. It’s fast approaching opening day and everything is in order. It all needs to be perfect to overcome the scepticism of his guests. Then all his masseuses are killed, a regular but inconvenient occurrence. The only option is to get a human masseuse in; at least until other vampire masseuses can be located. Alex was stunned when the woman hired turns out to be the woman who had been haunting his dreams, the one he has been searching for. But to be together, she’ll need to join his kind. Death is her worst fear, but it’s not the only thing they’ll need to overcome.

Last Resort is unusual in that most of the vampires in the tale see themselves as superior to humans. To them, humans are only useful as feeders. They are excited by human fear; to run is only to stimulate. This is something I found rather hard to come to grips with when reading the tale, being a person who likes their stories happy. Yet, this did not detract from the tale itself. Fairly well written, the tale flows smoothly with a couple of twists. Each character is well developed, as are their actions. Last Resort is also unique with the concept of a vampire resort situated in the tropics. There are few tales where vampires are able to handle sunlight, even in small quantities. The same is true in this tale, only Sally Painter has gotten around this with the use of technology. Sex is described in detail and occurs frequently. I particularly like the concept of levitation sex. :) Enjoyable, slightly out of the ordinary, Last Resort is a great read for vampire lovers and anyone looking for something somewhat different.
