The Society 2: Midas’ Treasure

Aileen Slipsworthy is a children’s writer. Having moved from the big city three months ago in a successful bid to lift her writer’s block and depression, she has mostly kept to herself in her cottage on the fringe of the forest. She has made no friends as of yet, but her outlook on life has significantly improved – until one night she nearly dies at the hands of a vampire when he becomes so lost in the taste of her blood that he takes too much. It turns out that Aileen is one of the few human women who have a Sumerian gene, which is much sought out by vampires as they can only mate and have children with women who have the gene. When next she awakens she is horrified to discover she too is now a vampire. Unable to come to come to terms with her new existence at first, ending her life stays at the forefront of her mind until her new mate, Mykil, is able to show her the benefits of being a creature of the night: the ability to fly, many years of life and, above all, a great love beyond her wildest imaginings. But there is darkness waiting in the wings, from both human and vampire, that would destroy their new found and budding love. How much of a threat do these unseen foes pose? How far are Aileen and Mykil willing to go to protect each other and those they consider family?

Brenda Bryce is a relatively new and refreshing author on the writing scene. The Society 2: Midas’ Treasure is her second book and is as equally well written, fabulous and imaginative as her first, The Society 1: Regulating Archimedes. I have voraciously read (okay, devoured, to tell the whole truth,) both of these excellent tales and my cravings for more of the series go beyond those of a vampire in need of blood. This tale is hot and sensual, with some action and a moment or two of suspense thrown in for good measure. Sex scenes are fairly detailed with none of the more taboo aspects of lovemaking, though a variety of places find themselves christened by the amorous couple. Those of you who have read Regulating Archimedes will be delighted to catch up with and find out more about the other key characters in the series, including a little of the hero and heroine from the previous story. Midas’ Treasure is most definitely one to file away in the keeper library, right next to Regulating Archimedes. If you haven’t got either of these in your library yet, you should place them high on your to-be-bought list and grab ahold of them at your earliest opportunity. As always, please read the series in order. Whilst they can be read as "stand alones", reading them together will vastly improve your reading pleasure and ability to follow the storylines. I absolutely cannot wait for the rest of the series to come out, and will most assuredly be keeping an eagle eye out for news of their hopefully imminent release.
