The Pilot And The Pin-Up

Sydney Wagner owns a small bookstore called "The Starving Artist" which almost describes herself. She wants to leave her past behind and become a published romance author. On her way to a writer's conference, much to her dismay, she blows a tire. She pulls out her manual and is about to teach herself how to change a tire, when a good-looking man approaches her. Sydney finds out his name is Peter Kane, and he's a day trader in stocks, not to mention an exceptionally good pilot. After he changes her tire, they go for some breakfast at "Genie's Cafe". They spar wits against each other and have a decent enough time.

But Sydney pushes aside his idea of perhaps trying to go out on a real date. Later on, she changes her mind. They begin a torrid affair, all the while Sydney changes her emotions like the wind. One minute she's loving and carefree, the next she is distant and cool. However, she has reasons for behaving the way she does. Sydney doesn't believe that Peter will truly love her in the end when he finds out about her secret past. Only in the end, will they find out if what they share is real or just a passing phase.

I found this story highly enjoyable. Sydney was very likeable and I could understand her hesitation on forming a more stable relationship. She never had a very good impression of what love should be, thanks to her parents marriage and her own washed out relationship before Peter entered the picture. Peter is a nice, fun kind of man, which makes him perfect for the much too serious at times Sydney. It is interesting to read about how Peter has his own insecurities about love and relationships. For a short story, this plot packs quite a punch. Don't let the cover of the book fool you, it is hot and spicy throughout the entire 58 pages. Definitely a book to add to your reading list.
