The Devil’s Due
Lucas Satani is rich, handsome and completely in control of his life. Women want him and men admire him. However, he has a problem, one to do with how the public perceives him. Being Lucifer, his real identity, means that not everyone views Lucas with understanding. Lucas is in dire need of the public relations expert. He is a being as old as time. He is immortal. But that does not endear Lucas to humankind. To God fearing human beings, he is the Devil.
Miranda Kavandar, Randi to her friends, is an expert at making society’s bad boys look good, and dubious corporate activities look acceptable to the public. Randi is intrigued at the invitation to meet Lucas Satani. He is everything she craves in a man, sexy, suave, courteous and irresistible. However, his henchwoman, Lillith, gives her the creeps. Is it just jealousy that makes Lillith view Randi with such contempt? And can Randi, raised as a good Catholic girl, really take Lucas seriously when he infers he is Lucifer?
I liked The Devil’s Due. It’s an interesting concept to think that Lucifer is painfully aware he has an image problem and is determined to solve it. There is a great loneliness about the character of Lucas/Lucifer. He is an all powerful being searching for acceptance and love. Randi is like any mortal woman faced with temptation in the form of a bad boy and trying to reform him. The Devil’s Due is about greed, danger and the fact that true love can even provide redemption to the Devil. It’s a quirky story about accepting and believing in people despite what their flaws may be.
There is also the interesting theme through out the book of the competing factions of what we know of as Heaven and Hell. The ending is interesting as it makes you draw your own conclusions. The Devil’s Due is definitely worth reading.
