The Last Thing I Expected
Grace Adams is convinced that she is cursed. Nothing has gone right for her since she threw out her old boyfriend. When a mother of one of her students claims that Grace has a cursed aura, Grace grabs on to that explanation with both hands. While attempting a ‘de-cursing’ she is reunited with her high school crush, Eddie Mancilla. Eddie was always there for her in high school; from saving her from having to dissect a frog to making sure that she didn’t fail, he’s been there to help her. She never looked at him as the ‘chubby kid’ like her other classmates did. Grace knew that he was gorgeous on the inside as well as having beautiful eyes. Eddie has changed a lot from high school though; wanting to be a fireman helped him lose fat and pack on muscle so that instead of the chubby boy she remembers, he’s the stud down the hall. Grace knows it’s Eddie, but hasn’t told her friends. Until the night of the de-cursing.
Eddie has changed, he’s lost weight and he refuses to be the one to help Grace out of her perpetual messes. Well, except for this one time. Being ogled by the three most popular girls in high school does not make him feel any better about how shallow they are. Although he finds it surprising that he’s hurt when he sees Grace looking at him the same way. Now that he’s slimmed down he is having a hard time dealing with the new looks and sly smiles he’s been getting from people who new the old Eddie.
The Last Thing I Expected was a fantastic twist on the fat kid from high school blossoming into a gorgeous person. This time it’s the man. I really enjoyed watching the characters in this book struggle with the past and look at people as they are, not as they had been. The three friends, Grace, Tory, and Callie, were a delight to read about and I can only hope that Heather Rae Scott has plans to write the other ladies’ stories.
