Spindrift

Spindrift is a homoerotic/ paranormal romance by Jules Jones. The main characters in Spindrift are Richard and Niall. The story begins when Richard is walking on a beach and happens across an altercation between a large group of men. Richard is a new comer to the village and has only become accepted and trusted by a few members of the community. Richard offers assistance to the young man, Niall, in distress without even knowing what the situation was all about. He soon learns that one of the members of the village had stolen Niall’s skin. Richard, being a writer and researcher of myths, remembers that a mythological group known, as the Silkie’s were seals in the water, but could shed their skin and appear human without it. A man called William thought that he had stolen Niall’s sister’s skin but in reality had stolen Niall’s skin. William is deeply in love with Naill's sister and in spite of the mistake is holding the skin until Niall gives his sister to William as a trade.

After much discussion, Niall agrees to stay with Richard and goes with Richard back to his house. Niall knows some things about our society, but there are many things that he doesn’t know. Niall knows simple things like TV and the Internet, but he didn’t have that much familiarity with them. Other things like seeing big towns and shopping he found fascinating. Watching Niall see all these new things was like watching a child experience the world for the first time. Niall is a very interesting combination of childlike and adult experiences.

When Niall and Richard first meet, there seemed to be a connection between them. Richard felt it at once. Once Niall was able to calm down he began to look at Richard in a new light. Niall had heard about Richard in the past from other members of the community, but had never met him. It did not take the two of them long to realize that there was a strong link between them and the first scene when they came together was very poignant and erotic. Richard wanted Niall to feel not only safe, but cared for. Niall needed the feeling of security and caring that Richard had to offer. The two of them found all of the above and more. They soon realized that their feelings were much more than they could ever have imagined.

Life never goes, as we want it to and that is the same for Niall and Richard. They had many problems that they had to work through. Will Niall ever get his skin back from William so he can return to his people? If he did get it back would he even want to return? Will William ever get his hearts desire or will his love always remain unrequited?

Some of these questions will be answered, and others hopefully remain to be answered in Jules Jones’s next book Spindrift 2. Spindrift was fascinating. I learned more about the mythological group the silkies than I ever thought about. The scenes were woven together with the plot to form a very entertaining and picturesque vision about life in a remote fishing village. I would recommend this and the follow up book for a very entertaining and interesting read.
