Spindrift 2 Ship to Shore
Spindrift 2 Ship to Shore by Jules Jones is an erotic/ paranormal book that is a follow up to the first book Spindrift. In the first book, Richard was chosen to help a young man, Niall, in need before he even realized to Niall was not just an ordinary man, but a Silkie. A Silkie is a mythological creature that lives in the sea as a seal, but can shed its skin to live as a human on the land. In the past, sailors have stolen a silkie’s skin to force the silkie to stay with them. If some one steals a silkie’s skin it can no longer return to the sea. In the first book, a young sailor, William, Stole Niall’s skin and said that he would return it if he gave William his sister’s skin.
This story begins as William is asking Richard if Niall’s sister, Ailsa, is ok. The silkies still have not completely forgiven him for taking Niall’s skin even though he returned said skin. Richard is aware that if William had not done the deed then he might not have ever met Niall, so he feels that he owes him for inadvertently giving him a gift beyond compare. Many of the silkie’s work together with the fisherman as partners to help them catch fish: William has two such partners. William still loves Ailsa, but the silkies are afraid that he might try to steal Ailsa's skin to bind her to him, so she is staying away from him.
Next to join the plot is a group of tourists looking for a boat to hire. William says that he can take them, but when they question Richard to see if they can get a better price: they find out that Richard is waiting for his boyfriend to come ashore on the incoming boat. These visitors show the reader the worst type of intolerant homophobic individuals there are. As the story continues, we find out that William, Niall and Ailsa were very close friends before William did that unspeakable act. We all know that there are repercussions for every action that we do. William does take the tourists out, but he finds out that they want to do more than just fish. They want to hunt seals which is not only against the law, but as we the readers now know, not all the seals are just seals. The silkie’s are slowly dwindling in number and magical ability. They can’t afford to loose any more members in accidents that can be avoided.
The love and trust that is seen between Niall and Richard is very heart warming. Niall trusts Richard with his skin, which is the highest trust that a silkie could give a human. Richard would do anything to maintain Niall’s happiness.
As the possible threat to the silkies by the tourists continues, we will have to see if the villagers and the silkie’s can work together for everyone’s safety. Will William find a way to redeem himself? Will the rift between William, Niall and Ailsa be breached? Will the silkies find a solution to continue to keep their existence hidden? Will Niall and Richard’s love be strong enough to see them through these trials?
The continuation of Spindrift in Spindrift 2: Ship to Shore was a beautiful conclusion for the series. The combination of real life with the addition of mythological creatures, the silkies, gave the book a very grounded, but fascinating feel. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys homoerotic books with a paranormal flare. Thank you Jules Jones for a wonderful read.
