Taking Chase

Cassie Gambol is an amazing woman who has begun the journey to reclaim her life. She has escaped her ex-husband and has a new name in a new town far away from her previous life. With a terrible greeting to Petal, Georgia, she’s not quite sure that small-town living is what she needs. An accident at a stop light in her first three minutes in town throws her head first into the Chase family. With the specter of her past overshadowing her, Cassie tries to keep the Chase family at arms length, especially Shane, the sheriff.

Shane has been burned in the past and knows he shouldn’t even think about taking an interest in the newcomer. But her ability to be strong yet obviously terrified clutches at his heart and he knows that he will not let anything happen to her. When she won’t tell him everything he tries to understand, but battling his inner caveman is not an easy thing. That he’s willing to try is testament to the depth of his feelings, feelings he never wanted.

Taking Chase is the second in the Chase Brothers series and not only is it Shane’s story, but it also brings back Maggie and Kyle from Giving Chase. I was impressed to see that Lauren Dane had this installment occur a few years later than the last book. It gave Shane time to grow and soften a bit. To see him as he was in Taking Chase versus the angry, bitter man he was in Giving Chase was absolutely fantastic. I have always enjoyed when an author takes us along for a ride in a series of books and not only tells each character’s story, but also revisits the characters from earlier books. There are unfortunately only two more Chase brothers, but with Ms. Dane telling their stories, they will be worth the wait.
