Jumping the Fence
Jumping the Fence by Stephanie Vaughan is a homoerotic contemporary romance. Kevin is having a very erotic daydream about Ben Durrance, a recently hired co-worker. Kevin is still in denial and says that he is into girls. During an office meeting, all it took is one glance at Ben and Kevin is off in his daydream again. By coincidence, Kevin meets up with Ben and his friend at a restaurant, and Ben invites Kevin to eat with them. Soon Ben realizes that this might not have been such a great idea. Ben has also had his eye on Kevin, but he felt that he had no chance with Kevin. Ben offers to help Kevin fix his computer and while there Ben gathers his courage to see if Kevin is interested in him. The next scene is both hot and heartbreaking. Kevin is not ready to commit to more then just having their basic needs filled, and Ben needs more than just a quickie. Can Ben live with this or will this be the end for Ben and Kevin? Can Kevin overcome his old social conditioning and find happiness?
Ben and Kevin’s story is a familiar story to anyone that has finally decided to be honest to themselves. Kevin’s hesitancy about his sexuality is portrayed in a real life manner. Ben’s ability to forgive past hurts and move on is something that we should all aspire to. The evolving relationship between Ben and Kevin is very moving. The reader can feel the emotions of both to understand each mans pperspective. This made the story very intense. I loved how in spite of all the odds, Ben and Kevin formed a bond that is strong enough to withstand all that life throws at them. I would love to read a sequel to this story. Thank you, Ms. Vaughan, for another delightful read.
