Needing to produce an heir because of the stipulations in her dead husband’s will, Cassandra Braxton, Viscountess Reddington, embarks on a path of deception to produce an heir before his death is discovered. Obtaining the assistance of one of London’s notorious rogues, Mark Foxwood, is a perfect and risky chance. Yet the only one that will work in the secrecy needed if Cassandra’s plan is going to work. Mark, still reeling from the shame of a disastrous relationship with a woman he loved, is spending time alone away from women and the ton. Cassandra’s brash proposal intrigues a man who has seen and done everything sexually imaginable. After deciding to take her up on her offer Mark soon finds himself becoming deeply involved when danger comes calling on Cassandra. Her husband’s seedy business brings danger and the threat of death when someone believes Cassandra knows too much. Now a short-term arrangement turns into the beginnings of something than can bypass all the pain and shame that was the norm for both in the past.

A story full of amorous sexual encounters, A Carnal Agreement showcases a couple both hurt by life and relationships that connect instantaneously. Cassandra with her noncompliant personality turned out to be more than a handful and rather amusing as she continued to exert her independence. Mark, shadowed with the stigma of being a bastard son and a rake, still shows that he’s honorable when it counts. Ms. Violet couldn’t have designed a better couple for a plot that was magnetic, suspenseful, and at times rather brutal. This is what I expect when reading about those who dwell in the darkness taking advantage of the numerous pleasures to be had. Ms. Violet mentions her love of history and that is more than evident in the little nuances that are sometimes forgotten, but as in this story, makes it so much more authentic. I hope Ms. Violet will continue to provide readers with offerings in the historical genre because it’s apparent she has the skills needed to provide quality stories.
