Trilogy No. 102: Opposites Attract
Cat Johnson brings readers a collection of stories that lives up to the promise of Opposites Attract. Each story brings two unlikely people together and shows just how right they are for each other.
Taking a Leap opens the collection.
Bradley Morgan knows computers. This self-proclaimed geek can fix almost anything with keys. When an author spills coffee on her laptop and needs some serious emergency recovery, Bradley thinks he has finally landed a cake assignment. That is, until he discovers the author needs his help with a few scenes. Romance writer he is not, but if it gets his co-worker, Alyssa Jones, to notice him, who is he to object? Of course, Bradley doesn’t expect anything to happen with Alyssa since geeks are definitely not her type.
Cat Johnson starts this anthology off with plenty of humor. I thoroughly enjoyed Bradley’s deprecating wit. I enjoyed seeing their surprise attraction grow. This is one story where the nice guy definitely doesn’t finish last.
Light My Fire continues the trend of unlikely lovers making the perfect match.
Quintessential ladies’ man, Troy O’Donnell has found the perfect woman, but this dedicated bachelor isn’t ready to believe she is the one. Sexy publisher Amy Gerald moves in next door to cat-sit, and is more than relieved when this handsome firefighter comes to her aid. He awakens her deprived libido. It’s too bad every time she gets close to him, he seems to run in the other direction. Can anything change Troy’s mind?
This romantic comedy of errors is sure to elicit laughs from the reader. The attraction between these two characters is instant and so hot that it becomes comical to see how quickly Troy back-pedals. For a man who has had his fair share of women, it is refreshing to see his hesitancy in the face of meeting the right one.
Second Time Around rounds out this collection.
The last place Antonio Sanchez wants to be is at a New Year’s Eve party that reminds him he is no longer part of a couple. With his wife needing some “space”, this once happily married man is facing some major upheavals. When Maddie walks in, it is apparent that she is even less thrilled to be at the party than him. Finding a kindred soul in Maddie makes the night more tolerable, but he’s not sure he is ready for more. Of course with a cast of well-intentioned, in-love-themselves friends, Antonio might not get a choice.
This is perhaps the most poignant of the three stories. Readers will ache alongside Maddie and Antonio as they move forward with their lives. The telling also conveys Ms. Johnson’s trademark humor, thus creating a complete story.
Trilogy No. 2: Opposites Attract is sure to leave readers smiling with its wit, romance, and fantastic characters. Each story can stand alone, but readers will find it enhanced by its connection to the other stories. Though I did not find each story overly developed, the author instills plenty of background and motivation, and I enjoyed the characters and romance contained within.
