Devils on Horseback: Nate

Nate Marchand and his four friends, the Devils on Horseback, are ex-Confederate soldiers. All they want is to move on with their lives and forget about the horrors they left behind, so they head out West. In the small town of Grayton, Texas, they believe they may have found a place to stop for a while. Nate heads into town to post a sign for the services of D.H. Enterprises and makes the acquaintance of Samuel O’Shea, the most powerful and richest man in town. At the general store, he runs into one Elisa Taggert, the granddaughter of Jed Grayton, the man who started the town, and the sworn enemy of Samuel O’Shea. D.H. Enterprises sells their services to anyone who will pay them, and they will do anything that is asked of them. They are hired by Mr. O’Shea to remove the Taggerts from the land that he bought from Elisa’s mother before she died. Even though they have sworn to do what is asked, Nate has a hard time trying to oust them off their property because he is taken with Elisa. Fate has stepped in and put Nate and Elisa in each other’s path where sparks fly every time they meet. However, all is not as it seems with the dealings between the Taggerts and Samuel O’Shea. There are two sides to every story. What the Devils will have to decide is who is right, who is wrong and on whose side will they stand.

I was immediately taken in by the Devils on Horseback. What a wonderful combination of personalities between the five men. Gideon, Zeke, Jake and Lee are brothers and cousins who have taken Nate into their fold. But no matter what, they remain solid and faithful to the promise they made to always stick together. The way Elisa dealt with the Devils showed the strength of who she is and what she had to become to safeguard her family. In her fight to save her family’s land, Elisa comes up with some good plots and plans that had me laughing out aloud. The budding relationship between Nate and Elisa was heartwarming and passionate. This was a story I had to read as quickly as possible and was sorry to see it come to an end. Beth Williamson knows how to tell a story, and I can’t wait to read the next installment of the Devils - Jake’s story.
