Roth Lawrence has never quite fit into the modern world. As a professor of Viking History, he feels more comfortable in the past than in the modern world. Roth is taking a group of students to the north in the dead of winter to learn what life was like and what difficulties they will face. Roth felt a need to take a walk, but a storm kicked up. When it clears, he realizes that he is lost. Injured, freezing and lost, Roth believes that he will die, but then he sees a fire in the distance. Is the fire a mirage, or is someone or something out in the dead of night?

Ms. Hill has taken a mystical being and placed him in the present world adding historical facts to add factual information to the story. Roth is frightened with the situation he finds himself in, but his adaptability allows him to accept things that other people would never acknowledge. Roth finds something or someone that may fulfill every need and desire that he ever had if he is willing to accept what for most people is just an old wives tail or fantasy.
