Zinna
New Orleans has always held a fascination for Zinna, but she always thought she would share the experience of being there with her partner Megan. Now she finds herself sitting looking at the Mississippi River, wondering if she’s done the right thing leaving without a word to anyone. It’s always been her dream to become a full time artist working in New Orleans, which is why she now sits on a bench in front of the river sketching a lone saxophone player. That one sketch sets her dream in motion, and now all that she needs to make life perfect is to have Megan move over to New Orleans, but will she?
Zinna is a very interesting book; although the main character is a lesbian the story is more to do with the pure love that two people share together and the choices and decisions that we make to try and give our loved ones everything they desire. As an artist I saw a lot of myself in Zinna, and I found the story almost like a mirror of my own life. Readers will be able to follow a year in Zinna’s life and will see her grow into a much more confident person who is aware of herself, and who realizes the fears that held her back before.
This is a fantastic book and one that I would highly recommend to people. Although readers may shy away from the book because of the f/f plotline, it is handled so delicately that it is hardly noticeable. Kira Chase has produced a great novel that looks into the very psyche of the people involved, each with their own stories and issues that they deal with in their own way. I will definitely be looking out for more of Ms. Chase’s work.
