In Darkness Reborn
Alexis Morgan continually impresses this reader with her ability to craft well thought out, detailed stories that contain a wealth of friendship and emotion. I was immediately won over by her first books, Dark Protector and Dark Protector, In Darkness Reborn continues her trend of quality, hot paranormals.
This third book in the Paladin series can be read alone, however, readers will find that reading one is never enough. Additionally the humor and subtle character nuances of many situations are enhanced by the storylines from the previous books. The mission to find out who is out to destroy the Paladins, and subsequently endanger humanity, takes a decided twist when Barak becomes more deeply involved in the investigation. As an Other, he realizes most of the Paladins would just as easily see him dead as work beside them. However, now that he has crossed over, he intends to make a new life for himself. When tensions send him to the geology lab as an assistant, Barak finds the sister of his enemies a tempting challenge. He resolves to help her, but refuses to disclose the nature of his people at the risk of further destroying them.
This story has it all. As a fan of this series, I thought I had an inkling of what to expect from In Darkness Reborn, yet Mrs. Morgan surpassed every expectation. The storyline is involved and interesting. The development never falters and brings the reader fully into this unseen conflict between humans and Others. The characters are fully fleshed. Barak and Lacey are a dynamic couple. I enjoyed how both were challenged to look beyond the obvious. Mrs. Morgan brings their emotions and conflict to light with a wonderful balance of humor, sensuality, and tension. The secondary characters are just as interesting, with fans of this series being treated to continued byplay from Blake Trahern and Devlin Bane. From start to finish, this book is a treat and demonstrates yet again why Mrs. Morgan is an author to watch.
