Fireworks on the Fourth

Fireworks on the Fourth is a short, but intensely satisfying, read. It tells the story of Aidan and Jess, a married couple who have made many of their most important memories watching fireworks on the Fourth of July. It is, for them, the most significant day of the year. They even celebrated their marriage on the Fourth. But after years of marriage, Jess is left to celebrate alone. Aidan is on a business trip, and she’s not sure he’ll get to her before the fireworks begin.

I loved this story because the relationship between Jess and Aidan is shown so realistically. There is no pretense between them, and I appreciated that. Also, this is not just one episode in their lives. Jess is thinking of all that’s happened to them, showing their changing lives and relationship while she waits and wonders if Aidan will come to her. I could feel her sadness as she waited. The connection between this couple feels real, and the dialogue makes it clear that they are in love. This is a wonderful story. Well written and full of heart, it made me smile. Ms. Lyons has delivered a delightful little tale in Fireworks on the Fourth.
