The Devil’s Temptation

Lady Maura Daventry has tried to face the ton as it snickers and whispers behind its fans and false smiles. Regardless of her strict adherence to the rules that society has set up, they still expect her to act as shamelessly as her mother did. It’s even gotten to the point where the young bucks who shun her in the ballrooms have no problems trying to get under her skirts in the shadows of the gardens. She has been attempting to ignore them, but with new information about her mother surfacing, she finds that she cannot take it any longer, especially the scorn of Lord Gabriel Hawksley, the son of the man who was her mother’s downfall. Why is it that he’s always the one to assist her in extricating herself from the lascivious intentions of improper young men?

Gabriel has taken the opposite road in dealing with the ton’s expectations; instead of denying them with his actions, he has willingly become the very devil they expect him to be. But after years of this, he tires of the debauchery and the stains he has accumulated on his very being. Disgusted with his attraction, yet powerless to the desires she engenders, he cannot seem to stay away from Lady Maura. Could assisting her become his absolution? Can the two of them flaunt their relationship before the ton and survive or will society grind them under its well-turned heel?

This is one of the best books I have read in a while. I have not been in a historical mood, so to speak, in quite a while, but this one struck me as a refreshing foray into the past. The Devil’s Temptation draws the reader into a world of rumors, misunderstandings, guilt, and depravity all hidden behind the stiff facades of the ‘proper’ lords and ladies of the ton. With the ability to transport the reader into her world, Kimberly Logan has garnered herself a fan in me. I was awed by the intricacies that were unfurled in this book, not only plot wise, but the emotions that the characters evoked. Maura was a true delight. She was determined to step outside of the box that her family had placed her in order to do the right thing. Regardless of her attempts, she found herself in trouble and rescued by the delicious Hawksley. He was a fantastically redeemed hero that had been in the depths of a tawdry hell only to bring himself out of it on his own -well, with a bit of help from Lady Maura. The chemistry between these two was amazing. I found myself searching out the first book in this series and will continue to read the series as long as it continues.
