Unforgettable
Unforgettable by Shelley Munro is a well-written glimpse into the not-so-distant past. Set in London in 1941, it is the story of a young woman’s journey to stand up for what she truly wants. Margo is a lady of the manor and Johnnie is only the gardener’s son. They fall in love, but Margo’s mother deems him an unacceptable love match for her daughter. Margo relents, and becomes engaged to Peter, a more suitable man. She and Johnnie have harsh words. And then the war begins.
Most of the action in this story takes place during one night when Johnnie and Margo take shelter during an air attack. The chemistry between them is hot, and they have an emotional attachment that can’t be hidden. With tenderness and compassion, Johnnie and Margo share their love. It is a story that is realistic and, at times, frightening, as bombs crash nearby. There are a few sad moments but they don’t overshadow the love story. It is intriguing from an historical viewpoint to see what life was like during those turbulent times.
This book is so true to the time period that as bombs crashed and the couple finds solace together I actually felt my heart race. I felt as if I was in the bomb shelter with them, not only enjoying their pleasure but feeling their fear, too. It is amazing storytelling, I think, to have readers feel so strongly for characters. The characters and historical realism were outstanding in this title and really made the story one that will stay with me for a long time. I feel as if I’ve not only been entertained, but was given a peek into a time long gone.
Unforgettable by Shelley Munro is exactly that—unforgettable! A truly great read!
