The Dark Legacy by K. G. McAbee is the first book in the young adult series The Crystal Staircase. The story is a combination mystery, fantasy, and adventure and holds appeal for all ages, not just teens. Noah and Holli Macgregor with their lab Gilbert have just moved into the house their father inherited. The house is full of strange pictures that seem to shimmer and a mystery; what happened to Great-Uncle Enoch who left the house to their father right before he disappeared? Noah is also given a couple of old journals and if the stories in their Great-Uncle Enoch’s journal are to be believed the house is some kind of portal to another world or time. Are the stories true? Can Noah, Holli, and Gilbert indeed travel to another time or place and do they want to?

This story is a cute beginning to an intriguing new series. My nine year old son and I both enjoyed following the adventures Noah, Holli, and Gilbert found themselves in. We will be watching for book two’s release to find out what happens next. K. G. McAbee managed to squeeze in a lot of fun elements into this one story; there is a mystery, a fantasy world, talking animals, pirates, and plenty of adventure to keep one entertained. If you or your child like a little mystery and fantasy with your adventure pick up this story and escape into a world of make believe.
