Sweet Dreams
Five years ago in the China Jungle, Veronica Duff, vampire hunter went tracking down a vampire by the name of Joaquin. There was a temple that was supposedly built to pay tribute to the Master of all Vampires. It was rumored that he was there lying unable to rise. Joaquin believed the rumors and wanted to drain the master of all his powers.
Veronica has been having dreams at night of her lover. He gives her just what she wants and more. Her lover is a vampire named Diego. Veronica’s friend Janet, her girlfriend Krista, and her father and commanding officer Billy, are all worried about her. Veronica keeps waking up at night feeling drained of energy. Diego tells her he loves her but how can someone who is not real love you? The only explanation Janet can come up with is she thinks that when Veronica went to China that Diego spotted her and fell in love with her and so he projects an image of himself in her dreams. Veronica goes along with what Janet says but doesn’t understand her loss of energy. Krista tells of an old saying that vampires sometimes use metaphoric leeches as their finger mark to drain their victims while they are millions of miles away. Veronica may not be able to see the leech however she knows that Joaquin has somehow given her this leech and he won’t be happy till he has destroyed her.
Sweet Dreams was a new concept for me. It was not new about the vampires but about vampires using leeches to gain power and control over their victims. I enjoyed the relationship between Veronica and Diego. It reminded me of Buffy and Angel in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I read that Dakota Rebel has been writing many vampire stories but Sweet Dreams is her first published one. I hope she gets more of her work published. Sweet Dreams had great momentum throughout the book, which made reading it a delight.
