My Immortal
Rhys Morgan, an Immortal warrior, is in search of a specific demon, one who killed his former partner. Now he’s breaking in a new one who is proving to have more attitude than America does cars. He’s on his search one night when he runs into a demon and then into a beautiful woman who thinks he needs saving. A woman who has been featured prominently in the visions/dreams he’s been having.
Amy, a surgeon just getting off a long shift at the hospital where she works is regretting having walked to work. It’s dark and spooky out, and she’d rather be home curled up. She’s just wishing again that she’d taken her old, not-in-such-good-shape car when she hears something from down a dark alley. Without thinking, she dashes in and comes face to face with Rhys and the demon he is fighting.
This book grabs you from the beginning and never lets go. I know some will compare it to another series of popular paranormals, but I’m here to tell you, Ms. Coi hasn’t copied a thing. She’s created a race of Immortals with a method of transition that I found unique.
Rhys is everything you’d want in a wounded, bad boy hero. He thinks he’s incapable of feeling love any more, he knows getting her involved in his life is a bad idea and it is, but at the same time you root for him. You want him to admit he can still love someone, Amy and that while their life might be difficult, they can do anything together.
Amy is everything good about chic-lit with none of the bad. She’s feisty and wants to be in control of her life, but she too doesn’t believe she’s cut out for love, is afraid to love someone for fear they’ll be taken away.
The story plays out over the course of a couple of weeks with secondary characters that I loved. They were each individuals with their own personalities and quirks. I loved Baron and his arrogance. He epitomizes the young who think they know everything and are invincible. Of course, this young Immortal is smart enough to learn that he doesn’t and isn’t, but I won’t say anything more.
Amy and Rhys come close to losing everything, but My Immortal delivers the HEA that we all want from our romances, though I wasn’t sure for a while just how Ms. Coiwas going to pull it off. She did, however and, the way she did made the story all that much the better. And the epilogue is, well, it makes the story all the sweeter. But don’t get me wrong, there is plenty of heat in this story. Amy and Rhys have the kind of passion that few find and even fewer manage to keep.
