A Rogue’s Game
Julian Clay, the Earl of Westleigh, is the reformed bad boy of the Ton. He saved a young woman from death by jumping in front of a bullet meant for her and now society has welcomed him back with open arms. Julian thinks it is all a bit of rubbish, but he needs money and the perfect way is to gamble with these high rollers and hopefully win. But all that doesn’t matter the moment he sets his eyes on Eve Reynolds.
Eve is not who she seems to be. She is in cahoots with her uncle Warren to cheat and steal from the rich members of the ton. They have been doing this for years, moving around from city to city on different continents trying to take what they can and then run for the hills. Eve is fed up with this lifestyle and wishes for a quiet life in the country with a nice cottage and a garden she can tend. But one night, while she is playing cards at a party, she notices a striking man watching her. He unnerves her and she knows the jig may be up. She tries her best to shake him off, but Westleigh won’t leave her alone. And when his kisses consume her, Eve knows she is done for.
As these two gamble with their bodies and minds, Julian is on a mission to have Eve succumb to his charms. He doesn’t only want to use her for his own physical pleasure, but rather try and figure out the mysterious Eve and possibly have a more permanent relationship with her. Eve wants the pleasure and begins to place bets between Julian and herself that will lead to her possible downfall and a broken heart.
Renee Bernard is one of the best historical romance authors around and she shines with A Rogue’s Game. This is one book that has the best of everything. Julian is truly wonderful as a former cad who falls for Eve, who is not what she seems. Their cat and mouse game leads them and the reader on a merry chase. And this chase is worth every moment, especially when Julian ends their game with a very interesting check mate. Let’s just say that things progress in a very satisfactory manner where they don’t need any clothes on between the two.
Even though there are some times of desperation from Eve, the overall tone of A Rogue’s Game is lighthearted and a joy to read. I loved the couple Julian and Eve become and most readers will feel the same. A Rogue’s Game is a lovely romance that won’t disappoint!
