Mozart’s Ghost
Anna Chester is a school teacher during the day and a medium in the evenings. Anna would desperately love to be normal because when friends, especially male friends, find out that she sees and talks to ghosts they seem to think she is too much of a flake to deal with. Edward Appleton, piano virtuoso, is spending all his time preparing for a piano competition that could make his musical career, but his daily practicing is driving Anna crazy. She needs quiet to concentrate on the ghost and relay their message to her customers. Then Anna and Edward meet and there is an attraction and a great deal of chemistry but are either of them ready for a relationship? Plus, Anna is terrified about telling Edward what her other job is but what kind of relationship can be built on a lie, even if it is a lie of omission?
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this story. When I first picked up Mozart’s Ghost by Julia Cameron, I wasn’t sure if it would appeal to me, but it is really good. There are really three main characters in the tale: Anna, Edward, and a pushy, interfering ghost who wants Anna to help Edward. The ghost is such a self-centered egotist, adding a great deal of humor to the already tentative romantic relationship between Anna and Edward. Although both Anna and Edward are pretty secure about themselves and what they want in life, neither is secure in what they feel for the other. This is one of those stories in which your emotions will run the gauntlet and I both laughed and cried through the book. I fell in love with both of the flawed yet wonderful characters of Anna and Edward. The romance felt like one of those sweet, caring, tentative crushes you develop when you are in love for the first time and I wanted to hit anyone who interfered with the progress of the relationship. But of course, several people interfere and that is what makes the story interesting and causes the emotional roller coaster. If you generally don’t care for paranormal, give this story a try anyway. The ghost is like an unusual third main character instead of spooky or weird!
