Upon Eagle’s Light
Hydeia and Ammah are both Eaglekins, which means they have a bonded relationship with an eagle. When the eagle partners mate with another eagle, their human Eaglekins are supposed to mate too. When Hydeia and Ammah’s eagles pick now to mate, their human counterparts, who are both on important missions, find the time inconvenient. Ammah has no intention of mating with a Eaglekin female having left the ways of his people behind to live with mankind. Hydeia has no idea why Ammah has refused her but she is determined to complete her mission so maybe it is for the best. Unfortunately Hydeia’s mission may kill her. Ammah doesn’t intend that to happen even if he doesn’t want to mate her.
Upon Eagle’s Light by Clover Autrey is a good story. I found it difficult to get involved in the story at the beginning because it has so many new terms and history the reader has to digest before being able to really understand the characters and their dilemma. The tale is filled with mystical beliefs of a people who are set apart from the rest of humanity by their ability to bond with an eagle. Unfortunately these unique people will not be able to stay separate from the rest of mankind because mankind is hunting them to use them and involve them in their wars. Once I understood what was going on, I really liked the characters of Hydeia and Ammah. They are even unique to their own people because they are more emotional and willing to help others than is taught or respected in their sheltered society. I think there is a good lesson about societies that try to isolate themselves from the world and any beliefs different than theirs versus people learning to live in the world with people different from themselves. This is a complex story but it is a good book. I enjoyed it and would like to read another tale about this unique society. If you enjoy good folklore, myths, or other cultural tales that relay a good character-building message, you will enjoy Upon Eagle’s Light.
