Harmony

Anne Mahroum’s life is just about perfect. She has a loving husband, a new baby boy and her work as an artist satisfies her and brings her the recognition she desires. The one thing Anne can’t seem to get past is the fact that her son Evan was born with club feet. While Anne tries to come to terms with her son’s deformity, she starts to wonder about her own father and when she discovers a letter addressed to her mother from an aunt she never knew existed, it’s just the catalyst Anne needs to push her mom into telling her why they left her father when she was a child.

Anne’s life keeps pushing forward with doctor’s visits and surgeries to correct her son’s feet, meetings with other parents whose children face the same medical condition and her growing attraction to one of the men in her support group. Then her mother finally tells her what she has been hiding from her for all these years and Anne’s life takes another turn.

Harmony by Joanna Goodman is a fascinating glimpse into the life of a new mother who wants to answer the secrets of her past while trying to do the best for her son.

Anne is a strong woman who agonizes over how other people view her son’s deformity and the pain he faces to correct it. She is at times more concerned with Evan’s physical appearance and seems overly materialistic while at other times she is just another new mom who wants the best life for her son.

Ms. Goodman has penned a bold and insightful story that gives you pause and makes you think about your own blessings.
