Aquamarine

Aquamarine by Sara Bell is a homoerotic contemporary romance.

All Derek ever wanted to do is play football, not deal with the press. His being a star football player, nominated for the Heisman, and being gay just makes things difficult. Derek is lucky to have a team, for the most part, that accepts him and a roommate, Ford, who sticks up for him in times of trouble, just as he did for Ford. The biggest problem was when he made a play for Ford, Derek was turned down. Now Derek has his boyfriend Paul that he cares about, even though everyone including his parents dislike him. Derek still secretly longs for what he can’t have with Ford, but is willing to accept friendship. Derek is lucky that his parents accept him for who he is. Paul says he loves Derek, but his unwillingness to do anything that Derek wants to do or even go to his games, speaks louder than words. When tragedy strikes, will Paul be at Derek’s side or will Derek get the surprise of his life?

Ms. Bell has created a very compelling story about overcoming odds and finding out that life may have a surprise for you just around the corner. This story has a heart and soul not usually seen in short stories as the lives and tribulations of Derek and Ford unfold. Derek has always had the support of his family, unlike many gay men in our society. The level of acceptance he has is the way things should truly be. Ford has always played it straight and accepted Derek as his best friend. Sometimes friendship and acceptance can help people bridge the gaps that keep us apart and help us find true happiness. I will be waiting for more stories by Ms. Bell. Thanks go to Ms. Bell for another creative and inspiring story.
