Old Friends and New Fancies
Jane Austen has often been referred to as the “Queen of Classic Literature”. Many writers and filmmakers alike have undertaken the difficult task of attempting to capture the author’s spirit in book and film by either adapting her literary pieces or creating thoughtful sequels to Austen’s work. This novel, originally written in 1913, considers itself, and is subtitled, the Imaginary Sequel to the Novels of Jane Austen. Yes, dear readers, you read that correctly. All of them.
Sybil Brinton has taken on the daunting task of not only taking characters from one of Ms. Austen’s novels and creating a what-if scenario, but she’s thoughtfully combined most of the characters in all of Austen’s books and allowed them to mingle with each other and some totally new characters in one thoroughly entertaining story.
While any Jane Austen enthusiast would be incredibly thrilled by such an undertaking it was, at times, disconcerting to my poor mind, which would stop reading when a beloved character was introduced in the story and have to reprocess their original novel and role. However, barring that some time minor distraction, it was nonetheless a wonderful walk down memory lane to meet again those aptly-titled Old Friends and be introduced to new ones as well.
Ms. Brinton has thoughtfully written Old Friends and New Fancies, ingeniously matching characters from each of Austen’s previous novels. Although there were many hurdles and heartaches for the characters, it was a joy to witness the inevitable conclusion of blossoming love. Old Friends and New Fancies is a welcome addition to any Jane Austen fan’s collection.
