Fabulous Brits
Moor Love by Carol Lynne
Caleb Winters accepts a job in a year long internship to Scotland. He is hired to work for Jon Cook, a man rendered mute and left with a limp by a horrific car crash that took his father’s life. Caleb went to Scotland hoping to learn more about sheep, Scotland, and to get a few stamps on his passport; what he didn’t expect was to learn about love.
Jon and Caleb were both great characters. Jon is a tortured, taciturn man who has become almost a recluse due to his injuries and his overwhelming sense of guilt. Caleb is a fresh faced, sunny young man with an eager outlook on life. The two are perfect for each other and this short story just whetted my appetite for more about Scotland, Jon, and Caleb.
Yin Yang by Sedonia Guillone
Fifteen years ago Tim and Basho were in the first blush of young love. Then Basho is murdered, and Tim is left to find his way in a world gone dark. Now Tim has finally realized that he must put the past behind him. In an effort to do this, he travels to Tokyo to say his final good-bye at Basho’s grave. While staying at the White Tiger hotel Tim learns the real truth of his lover’s last moments and finds someone that is the yin to his yang.
I can’t really say too much without giving away the plot of this story. I will say that I would have enjoyed this story a great deal more if I had read the previous books in the series. While it is able to stand alone, I felt like there was quite a bit of background that I was missing out on. Tim and Basho’s love story was tragic, but I really didn’t connect with these characters. If I had, then the emotions behind the tragedy and the events that took place afterwards would have been more touching.
Kingsoak by Willa Okati
After his car breaks down in the dangerous neighborhood of Kingsoak, Matthew throws caution to the winds and begins to embark on an evening that will change his life forever. For Matthew is about to meet Gale, a man that will turn his world on its ear and offer him a choice that could mean the difference between a life of happiness or one of tedium.
I usually enjoy Willa Okati and her colorful characters and intricate worlds. Unfortunately, this one wasn’t one of them. I think that if Kingsoak had been a full length novel, or even a novella, I would have enjoyed it more. I was left wondering exactly what Kingsoak was and what made Gale so special. Matthew wasn’t a very charismatic character and because of this I couldn’t figure out why Gale was so taken with him.
Under the Law by J.P. Bowie
Peter is a struggling actor/singer working the clubs while he waits for his big break. At one of his gigs he catches the eye of John Reed, a recently promoted London police officer. John and Peter are instantly attracted to one another, but with Peter’s chaotic schedule and John’s new job as Inspector things don’t go as smoothly as both men had hoped.
I like J.P Bowie; I find that he brings a fresh take on the same old homoerotic plot. Peter and John are both sexy, attractive men, and I liked the fact that both men worked through their problems instead of using sex as a way to get past them. I wouldn’t mind having my own John as long as he came with his uniform and brought his handcuffs.
Bound Together by Jane Davitt
Simon Weatherly is surprised when a handsome Chris Ross shows up on his doorstep with a valuable book that Simon knows belongs to his ex-lover. It seems that Luke has been up to his old ways and cheated Chris of his wages and thrown him out of his bed. So, in retaliation Chris has taken the book and is looking for a buyer. But, things aren’t always what they appear, and Simon of all people should know to never judge a book by its cover.
A relatively new author to me, I only recently read her collaborative series with Alexa Snow, Jane Davitt has written a sweet tale of betrayal and redemption. Yes, a sweet tale, Simon is still recovering from being used by Luke, and Chris is freshly burned but all is not as it appears on the surface. How ironic that their mutual past with the same man might just be the basis for finding what they truly need. Ms. Davitt has managed to turn a potentially awkward plot device into a sexually exciting short story.
Bull Rider by Jade Buchanan
DJ Wes Scott is out for a night on the town with his new coworkers when he notices a huge hunk of a man staring at him across the bar. Isaac “Bull” Fintan is a former rodeo rider turned rancher, and the little Brit he has his eye on is just what he needs for relief. The only problem is that Bull doesn’t know if he can stop with just one taste of Wes.
Filled with the talented Jade Buchanan’s characteristic blend of humor and sexual tension, Bull Rider had me dropping my jaw a few times; this is one dizzyingly, hot, enticing story. Both Wes and Bull, two opposites on the look spectrum, could eat crackers in my bed. The sexual tension and the sexual culminations were so hot I was wiping the fog off my ebook reader’s screen. I have no idea where Ms. Buchanan gets her information from, but I would love to get a peek at her research. Whew! There was one particular scene that takes place in a truck, let’s just say that contortionists have nothing on Wes and that it was extremely HOT!
On the whole I found Fabulous Brits to be an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours. As with any anthology I liked some stories more than others, if I had to pick I would say that my favorites were Bull Rider by Jade Buchanan and Moor Love by Carol Lynne. I will definitely be on the look out for more by these authors.
