Long Black Cadillac
Vance is a man on a mission. He has been sent by his boss to tell a vamp in Louisiana to either get out or get dead. Vance does his job and does it well until he meets Clay. Clay is the vampire that Vance is supposed to roust out of the swamps. But Clay is quite happy where he is and he realizes that there is something very special about this tough as nails, deeply scarred man. Can they figure out why they have this connection before Vance’s boss realizes that he has been compromised or will they have to fight him to the bitter end?
I really like the smoothly flowing style that permeates this author’s works and the sardonic flair that seems to be a hallmark of BA Tortuga’s books. I loved Clay and Vance, and while the plot line of the vampire hunter falling for the vampire is not a new one, Long Black Cadillac certainly breathes new life into it. Clay starts out as your typical vampire, handsome and irresistible, but then we are fed little tidbits that let us see that he isn’t really all that typical. I thought the bad haircut allusion was hilarious. Vance is a man tortured by his past, he is a man who counts himself as one of the good guys and has a strong moral compass. Remy, as the lackey, is completely adorable. His character was immediately loveable and provided a needed lightness to some of the tense moments. Gryphon is another supporting character that entered the story towards the climactic ending and I fervently wish that we revisit him in a future work. I can’t wait to see if there will be more in this fascinating universe built by BA Tortuga. I certainly hope that we haven’t seen the last of these characters and there are so many different directions that a sequel could go. I need more of Clay, Vance, Remy, and Gryphon.
