China Dolls
Trying to pursue a career and a personal life can be difficult for anyone but also trying to maintain friendships with people doing the same thing can be a tough challenge but the ladies in this story do it with style and humor.
M.J. has always dreamed of being an on-air sportscaster but the male dominated world isn’t easy to break through especially for an Asian woman who knows more about sports than most of her so called colleagues. But M.J. keeps trying even when an old flame shows back up in her life and threatens to leave her heartbroken.
Alex is a strong, self-sufficient woman and that is part of what makes her such a successful lawyer, even though she is always facing the prejudices of clients who assume that as an Asian woman she is meek and unable to perform her job as well as her colleagues. Alex continues to search for love in all the wrong places until the man she has worked with for so long shows her that he might not be the playboy shark she has always thought he was.
Lin is an executive on Wall Street and loves everything about being a stockbroker; living on the edge is what she thrives on, especially when she knows that she will always have her friends to fall on when anything goes wrong. The one thing that she hated about her job was dealing with the male egos that seemed to always swirl around her. But when a new man came on board her team, Lin could tell that there was something different about him and maybe he would be the one to change her luck with men.
China Dolls by Michelle Yu and Blossom Kan is a fun, humorous foray into the lives of these three Asian women. It is clear from the start that their friendship is very important to them and binds them together in many ways. It was refreshing to read a story where the women encouraged and looked out for each other instead of the constant bickering and jealousy that is typically seen.
I have to admit that this book would not have normally been on my radar but I’m so glad that it was put in front of me because I genuinely liked the story and it emphasized the point of having friends who know you so well to share troubles and everyday things with is a rare gift to be treasured. 4 Angels!
