The Long Way Home

When Kevin Quinn gets a phone call from his brother in law, he is reluctant to respond. After all the last case he worked on blew up in his face. But Kevin can't live with himself if he passes it up. Teen boys are being abducted and with his psychic abilities he might be able to help. His only condition, no one can know what he's doing there.

Connor Dougal is the new detective that is saddled with the job of babysitting Kevin. Since Kevin is there unofficially that means that there is no money for hotels or other expenses. Since Connor is also a friend of the family, Kevin ends up staying with Connor in his apartment as well. Connor is skeptical of Kevin's "powers" and until he sees actual proof of them he won't believe.

But Kevin has knowledge of things in Connor's past that no one knows. How does he know about his best friend and what he meant to Connor? What does it mean that Kevin feels that the abduction of Connor's best friend all those years ago and the abduction of the boys now are related?

Wow! Really, just plain Wow! I love Z.A. Maxfield. I thought that her work in the first book I read by her, Crossing Borders, was really good. A book which I bought based on a fellow reviewers recommendation. But to put it bluntly, The Long Way Home made that one look like the work of a first grader. A lot of the flaws that I found within the first book by her, not that there were that many, were gone in this story. The Long Way Home was definitely the work of a more practiced writer, the plot flowed smoothly from one arc to the next, the flashbacks were seamlessly worked into the story to provide information without being overwhelming, and the characters were deliciously built, flaws and all. Kevin and Connor are perfect. The reluctant psychic, damaged in body and soul by his accident, Kevin is still trying to overcome his troubled past with his family and the tragedy that gave him his powers. Connor comes from a totally different background but his past, and the murder of his best friend, shaped him into the man and detective that he is today. Kevin is still struggling to overcome his past as is Connor. Z.A. Maxfield did a fabulous job of keeping the suspense level up on the story. I thought that the mystery aspect of the story was well written and carried out. The sympathy with which she handles Kevin's powers was deep and drew the reader into the emotions that he was feeling. Connor and his issues also brought a few tears to my eyes. The passion that the two men felt for each other was more than just warming up the sheets and the fear that they felt about their burgeoning relationship added that extra twist that made the story that much better. I can't wait to see what Z.A. Maxfield will write next and am waiting with bated breath. I highly recommend this one!
