The Viscount’s Addiction
Lord Blackwood is wrongly imprisoned and spends five long years in jail before he is found to be innocent and released. Unfortunately by then he is addicted to opium and extremely bitter. Upon arriving at his ancestral home, he finds he is also supposedly a married man. Ryder knows that his new “wife” is part of the treachery that put him in prison in the first place, and he wants revenge. The only thing the imposter is good for is warming his bed, and he will see her in hell before he lets her get close to him...or at least that is what he keeps telling himself.
With nowhere to go, Jessie has no recourse but to do as she is bid by her evil stepfather. He told her that Lord Blackwood wanted to marry her. Upon meeting her opium addicted husband, she realizes that he has no idea who she is or that they were ever married. Jessie is very attracted to the man that she thinks her husband could be, but with his addiction she can't trust him. She has secretly saved his estate from her thieving stepfather and stepbrother. Yet she is afraid to let Ryder know in case he decides to waste the money away on drugs. Husband and wife are very attracted to each other, but can all the past wrongs be overcome?
I thoroughly enjoyed The Viscount's Addiction. I found the unusual mix of a historical romance and a drug addiction to work very well for an amazing story. Ryder is haunted by the terrible wrong that has been done to him and wants to bring anything and everyone down with him. His own private hell and drug addiction clouds his true feelings, even from himself. Jessie is a strong woman that is stuck in extraordinary circumstances and she tries to make the best of it. The characters in the story are strong and interesting. The heat between Ryder and Jessie makes the story sizzle. The sex is heart-stopping and makes the reader just want to read more. I cannot wait to read more by Scottie Barrett.
