Hearts Desire

Ella Slater lost her mother when she was fourteen and ended up working in a brothel. Not knowing how long she would survive in such a place, she was grateful when Carson Kinsey rescued her from Madame Chloe. Carson took her into his home where she became the caretaker of his little daughter, Hattie. She prepares the meals and makes sure the house is spotless. Her biggest fear is what will happen to Hattie if Carson continues turning to whiskey to drown out his sorrows. When Carson’s wife left him and Hattie, promising never to return, his heart broke. He didn’t know how he would get over her walking out on him. Later, when he learned she had died, it had gotten to the point he didn’t even care. He needed someone to help take care of Hattie, so seeing Ella in need, he took her own as caretaker. Years later, he wonders why he allows a fallen woman to live in his home and care for his child. His love for her is unconditional; she has seen him at his worst and never left his side. Ella has never craved any man like she has Carson. Can the two meet somewhere in the middle and get past the hurt to find a life together?

I found Hearts Desire a most engaging read. I love the characters of Ella and Carson, and the way they come to terms with things in their life. Both have undergone much in their life and trying to escape out of that tormented shell really draws out their emotions. I love the premise of a wounded cowboy and a soiled woman brought together. Leanne Karella spins a tale that reaches deep into the heart of the characters. The way she portrays the life in the late 1800’s for a woman, not to mention the chores Ella endures, gives a great visualization to the reader. This wonderful story packs a huge punch and leaves an uplifting feeling.
