To Catch a Highlander
Sophia MacFarlane doesn’t know what to do about her erasable father; he has just lost their home and her mother’s jewels in a game of chance to Lord Dougal MacLean. Sophia may not know what to do about her father, but she knows she’s not just going to turn over her home that she has spent years working on without a fight. So Sophia develops a plan to make the home seem unattractive and unworthy, and then she intends to beat Lord MacLean at his own game and win her home back. But Dougal MacLean isn’t the London dandy she was expecting and becoming involved with him to win her home back may backfire. Sophia never expected to find him so attractive and she wasn’t ready for his overwhelming masculinity and charm. Can Sophia win back her home and is that really what her heart desires?
To Catch a Highlander by Karen Hawkins is another delightful romance set in the Highlands of Scotland and filled with stubborn, creative, intelligent, and utterly charming characters. I have read all of Ms. Hawkins “Highlander” stories and each is as entertaining, funny, and charming as the others. Ms. Hawkins is still on a roll with another creative and fun story. Each of these “Highlander” stories can be read independently, but they are all so humorous and charming you will not want to have missed one. I can’t decide if I like this one best because I read it last, or if it is really a better story than the others, but at the moment, To Catch a Highlander, is my favorite. The character of Sophie is so ingenious; I loved her creative solutions to try to catch Dougal off balance and then beat him at cards to keep her home. Dougal, turns out, is not the rake you are expecting, but a mischievous character of his own. These two were meant for each other if only they would stop trying to one up one another and take a closer look. The fact that neither Sophia nor Dougal is intending to marry also plays a part in keeping the romance from heading where you want to see it go. Then if the relationship between Sophia and Dougal isn’t trying enough, their relatives decide to get involved and introduce even more misadventures. If you are looking for a lighthearted and entertaining romance, I highly recommend To Catch a Highlander.
