Flame From Within
Amethyst Rose Lebrún, little Aimée, has lost her home, and most of her family, to the Union Army. She feels she has nothing left. She believes there is no love lost for any adult male who dresses in the color of navy and wears the brass buttons. There is nothing left for her in Vicksburg, and she does not even know where her brother lays his head. Aimée feels the only place left for her to stay is with her sister in New Orleans. Along the way, she runs into Captain Jordan, with the Yankees. She never anticipated the sensations that would draw her to him. Captain Palmer Jordan III is a very religious Union Officer. He believes God has sent him to care for Aimée. Captain Jordan is smitten with the young woman, and he hopes his mission will not fail as his attraction for her deepens. He has to find a way to keep her safe, no matter what the cost, even if it means taking her to live with his family in Virginia. Between the fighting of the war, and the devastation that it brings upon all the people, Aimée and Jordan are drawn to each other as they seek a way to try and heal their wounded souls.
Flame From Within is a stirring poignant read. One cannot help but be swept into the historical events of the Civil War, and the aftermaths each family shares. Aimée and Palmer are thrown into many obstacles, yet still manage to survive. I found them to be strong characters. One can share in their pain, sorrow, and even joy that surrounds them. Shirley Kiger Connolly pens a great historical read, depicting many ranges of emotions within her characters. This well-written drama shows the betrayal and hatred that sweeps during the war, as well as the solace each injured soul, in time, is able to find when learning to love and live once more. I was truly captivated with this story, and my heart went out to all the characters.
