Sabien Kroll is a thief who doesn’t always use his best judgment. He is successful at ‘retrieving’ items, but has a weakness for alien technology. He will try anything once, even if he doesn’t know what it is. After stealing a relic from the Peacekeeper archives and finding a piece of technology unlike anything he’s even heard of, Sabien finds himself entrenched in a plot to destroy humanity. Chased by the Peacekeeper agent, Hillia Rhyjil, who lost her posting due to his theft, these two become only a fraction of the group needed to save the human race as well as the other races that have populated the galaxy.

On the Fringes is an intricately woven tale that takes the stories of eight people and brings them all together to save the world. I was extremely impressed with how so many seemingly separate people came together. Starting with two distinct story threads, L.J. Garland crafted simultaneous events that apart were great, but when combined were fabulous. I have been a fan of Futuristic/Sci-Fi books for a very long time, but haven’t found one this compelling in a very, very long time. The pace of the story was perfect and the only thing that I found a bit distressing was that we didn’t get to see more of the Bionee. I would enjoy revisiting this galaxy again.
