Faerie magic saved Mairi MacKiernan nine years ago, by taking her from 1272 and bringing her, along with her brother and sister-in-law, into the present. After looking into family records, she learns of the murder of the last daughter with Faerie magic. Determined to save the life of her relative, she goes back to the past, and finds her self stuck until she can fulfill the Faerie bargain she struck.

After being tricked his whole life, Ramos has dedicated his future to service as a Guardian. He plans to make up for the wrongs he committed in his past, and his first mission is to go back in time to rescue Mairi. Ramos is not ready for the feelings Mairi invokes in him, and he is determined not to let love get in his way of redemption.

Third in the Daughters of the Glen series, Soul of a Highlander is by far my favorite. Mairi is a pleasure to read about. She doesn’t suffer from any horrible character flaws that can make a good character bad. The same can be said for Ramos. I loved reading about them separately, and loved reading about them together even more. While Ramos does suffer from the usual case of thinking he knows what is best for Mairi, he does it in a way that is more endearing then annoying. I think Melissa Mayhue is strongest when writing in the past, and this book is her best yet. The bad guys are just bad enough, and the good guys leave me wanting more. I didn’t want Soul of a Highlander to end, and I hope to read more about this world in the future.
