Blood Moon
It was 1811 in Cumberland, England. John Hyde-White is a vampire, who can also turn into a dire wolf. He is also a member of the clergy. Cassandra Thorpe is Jon’s love. Cassandra was bitten by a vampire named Sebastian Valentin. Unfortunately Sebastian was interrupted and in turn Cassandra has the thirst for blood and has the ability to turn into a kitten but she does not have the full strength or power of a true vampire. Clive Snow, Jon’s mentor, tells Jon that he believes that Sebastian actually didn’t plan on turning Jon into a vampire. He thinks Sebastian meant to kill him instead. Sebastian is now stalking Jon and Cassandra to finish what he started. Clive tells Jon to head to Moldavia, located between Romania and the Ukraine. There the Orthodox clergy are well versed on the topic of vampirism. Jon fears for Cassandra’s safety, so he brings her along. Once there Jon and Cassandra find out that Sebastian makes his home in Moldavia. Jon wants to kill Sebastian. Both Jon and Cassandra meet a gypsy named Milosh. Milosh agrees to help them with their quest and in turn Milosh also reveals that he is a vampire and a vampire hunter. Jon asks how that is possible and Milosh tells Jon that he can go days without craving blood. It is all due to the blood moon ritual. Milosh says he will teach Jon and Cassandra in due time.
Blood Moon is the first in this vampire series. I thought that Blood Moon was a good book. It had adventure, romance and intrigue enough to make me read the second book in this series called The Brotherhood. What I enjoyed the most was that even though Jon had been bitten, he cared more for Cassandra’s safety than his own. Another thing I liked about the characters in this story was the fact that they were likeable and have real emotions. This helped as it makes the reader feel more attached. Jon and Cassandra shared a loving bond.
As far as vampire books go Blood Moon seemed like it was more on the traditional side than the current vampire books out today. Traditional can be a very good thing to have sometimes and in the case of Blood Moon it was a great thing. Dawn Thompson’s writing style was very good that it made reading Blood Moon easy.
