Devils on Horseback: Jake
The Devils' story continues with Jake Sheridan and the rest of the Devils on Horseback, Gideon, Zeke and Lee Blackwood. Trying to stay one step ahead of a U.S. Army captain, they take jobs anywhere doing whatever is needed to put food in their bellies and money in their pockets. On a recommendation, they find themselves in Tanger, Texas—a town that looks battered and deserted. They are hired by the mayor to help restore the town after a group of raiders came through and destroyed it. But the mayor wasn't telling them everything. With a little persuasion, Jake discovers that the raiders not only took whatever they wanted they also took women under the age of 35. A few of the women have escaped their clutches so far, and one of them is Gabrielle Rinaldi. Gabby is a strong, stubborn woman who is trying to save her father's mill after he was permanently injured by the raiders six months earlier. She does not like or want the gunslingers helping her or anyone else in town because they are nothing more than troublemakers. What she can't seem to understand is why her body heats up and tingles every time she gets near Jake. The Devils try to unravel a mystery, save a dying town and stay one step ahead of capture. They have sworn to do what they can, but someone is helping the raiders. Jake and his friends are determined to find out who it is and stop them, even if it means placing themselves in danger.
Beth Williamson has done it again. This new installment of Devils on Horseback was fast-paced and exciting. It was wonderful to revisit these familiar men and see another one find a woman meant just for him. Gabby was the perfect match for Jake—a woman who wasn't afraid to go after what she wanted. Jake, ever the charmer, was so taken with Gabby, he found himself in new territory—tongue-tied and unsure of himself. What a great combination of characters. The passion that flares between them is fierce and unstoppable. Jakes' story pulled me in, and I found I couldn't put it down—reading it in one sitting. I love the Devils—each of them with their own ghosts and troubles to bury. I look forward to reading about each and every one of them. Zeke's story is next…and I can't wait.
