Final Words
Emma St. Clair is a young ME who is involved in a hit and run. She dies on the ER table and has the stereotypical out of body experience seeing the guy she was with among others and a golden tunnel. However, it’s not her time, and she’s sent back with a unique ability.
Detective Jason MacKenzie is the detective assigned to Emma’s case. Trouble is he’s lost others lately. His sister in an unsolved hit and run accident a couple of years before, and another police officer friend just recently to a gun shot, another unsolved case. He’s not batting very well lately, and he doesn’t like it at all. But he does like Emma despite the both of them vowing to not be attracted to the other.
I enjoyed this book, but I thought the author kept the characters apart for too much of the book. It’s understandable that they would fight their attraction given what’s going on, but a romance needs romance. I personally thought the two didn’t get together and start spending real time together soon enough.
This book could also be considered a romantic suspense with paranormal elements. It’s great that way. Lots of suspense, and the black moment was unexpected. Ms. Thackerson brings together all the elements of the book, winds up all the subplots and ends the book on a wonderful high note.
The characters are well drawn. Jason is a great wounded Alpha, all suppressed emotion and the idea that he has to do everything and know everything. Emma is wonderful as the gifted ME who doesn’t want her gift, but it leads her to an understanding of a relative that she wouldn’t have had otherwise. The book plays out well with the one caveat that I have already stated. I would have liked to have seen Emma and Jason have more romantic moments, but it’s a good book and well worth reading.
