Flame’s Ghost
Flame has never known love or a family. She was raised in an orphanage and knew she was very different from the other kids. Flame has a gift that allows her to “walk” in the mind of wolves and see out of their eyes. She has traveled to Montana to find a place where she can live with the wolves. A Sioux Indian called Grandfather, recognizing the gift in Flame as being like his own, takes her in and becomes her family. But someone is determined to take Grandfather’s land and they will kill anyone who gets in their way. Detective Shay Larson meets Flame through his best friend, Joe, Grandfather’s grandson. Shay and Flame are instantly attracted to one another and it is much more than lust. Can Shay and Flame along with their friends and family figure out who is trying to take Grandfather’s land and stop them before it is too late?
Flame’s Ghost by Cynthia Cantrell is the first book in a new Wolf Series. The story is wonderful: filled with intrigue, suspense, romance, psychic powers and an evil bad guy that will stop at nothing to get his way. The style of the story is like an old Native American folktale full of mysticism and the mystery of old beliefs. The tone of the writing is formal like a lot of old folktales and not what many modern readers are used to. If you can ignore the more formal storyteller style, this tale is well worth your time to read. Flame’s Ghost is filled with a fun cast of characters from the wise old Indian to a gay male sidekick, police, lawyers, and psychics! The main characters, Flame and Shay, are strong, independent, caring, and amazing people that anyone would love to know. This is not a werewolf story; there are no shape shifters, instead the main characters have the ability to read the mind of wolves and see out of their eyes so that the wolves are like partners. It would be really amazing to have this kind of affinity with animals; what a unique and creative twists this makes for the story! I enjoyed the story and loved the ending but I did struggle with the writing style. This style isn’t my favorite but I am very glad I didn’t let it stop me from reading the entire story.
