His Gift

Steve Macklin wakes up to find himself in a ditch. Cold, wet, and in pain he struggles down a path hoping to find help. What he finds instead is a house that appears to be deserted. But, it’s not. When he awakens it’s to find himself in the bed of Eliot, a very strange man dressed in old fashioned clothing. Nothing is what it appears to be in this strange and spooky house; can Steve figure out what is going on and why Eliot seems to think that Steve is His Gift?

I thought that His Gift was a very interesting story. At first I felt that it was a bit disjointed but then quickly realized that it was written that way on purpose. It helped to display the stop gap motion that Steve often felt throughout the story. I am usually pretty quick to figure out the mysteries in these stories but this one had me going longer than most. It wasn’t until almost the middle that I figured it out and I can’t tell you what triggered the realization because that would spoil the surprise. My enjoyment of the story was based purely on the plot and its execution. The characters weren’t ones that I was sympathetic to and I didn’t really form any sort of connection to either Steve or Eliot. Of the two I was more sympathetic towards Eliot and his misfortunes in life; I wish that the story could have been a bit longer so that I could have learned more about the characters and their lives. I look forward to more works by Clare London.
