The Last Promise
Captain Josh Elliott, a southern gentleman fighting for the Union cause, is captured by the Confederate army. He is sent to Andersonville, one of the worst prison camps. There he is abused and tortured. The only thing giving him the strength to live is the thought of his young wife waiting for him at home and the promise he made before leaving to return to her. Then, one night, he gets a bad feeling that something isn't right with Nora. With some of his fellow prisoners-of-war, he escapes.
Hated by her neighbors, the very pregnant Nora feels isolated and alone. She is about to give birth and needs her true love Josh by her side. She calls to him repeatedly, asking him to return home, reminding him of his promise. She's convinced he will arrive in time to see the baby being born.
The Last Promise is a poignant love story set during a time of hardship. Both the hero and heroine are very strong people, unwilling to allow anything, even a war, come between them. Author Mallary Mitchell skillfully balances the horrors of war with the sweetness of the romance. I knew The Last Promise would have a twist ending but this one took me by surprise. This is a tale I won't soon forget.
