Love Fang

Dr. Lauren Marsh is a dentist who works two late nights per week. She hasn’t dated anyone in a long time because of her work and caring for her Chihuahua, Smokey. Lauren is trying her best to lose that last ten pounds that has been plaguing her for a while now—only eating lean cuisine meals and salads. Once the weight is gone, she plans on joining an online dating site to try and remove her need for the romance novel and vibrator she keeps hidden between her couch cushions.

John Wright is a vampire with a problem. He is suffering from an abscess in his left fang and looking for a dentist who works nights. His only problem is that one hundred years ago he had a bad experience with a dentist who was also a blacksmith. John was married once before and has been scarred from the experience. His dead wife preyed on children and he had to dispose of her evil lifestyle.

Love Fang by Susan Blexrud is your typical old school vampire love story. John sleeps in a coffin, has no reflection, turns into a bat and wears a cape. I enjoyed the openness of John being a vampire. In the beginning, Lauren’s dental assistant, Rosetta, realizes he is a vampire and is scared. Eventually she does over come this and her and John’s assistant, Doreen, work together to try to get the two reluctant lovers together. Lauren has a very big decision to make. She becomes a vampire and spends eternity with John--which doesn’t sound so bad--or she chooses to find a human to love, which is more difficult but she stays human. I felt for Lauren and the big decision she had to make. It was very hard on her and I liked the fact that the novella dealt with her decision making more in depth than some I’ve read. Overall, the story flowed smoothly from start to finish and kept me turning the pages to discover which path Lauren would take. I also enjoyed the humor that Lauren added to the story. Her chihuahua had me cracking up just about every time he appeared in the story. Bravo Ms. Blexrud!
