A Haunted Love
Nick enjoys working as a Colonial American re-enactor at a historic site. He may only be the stable boy, but the work is fun, and he enjoys interacting with the kids and tourists that visit the colony. One night, after falling asleep after work and missing the final bus back to the city, Nick encounters David in the deserted colony. To Nick’s amusement, David sticks to his character even though they are in the same predicament. David has found a nice room in the historic inn, though, and he invites Nick to stay with him so he doesn’t have to sleep in the stables. Nick has been looking for a boy like David all his life, and he is delighted when they discover a mutual attraction to each other. David is gone when Nick wakes in the morning, and although Nick searches the entire colony for him, there is no sign that anyone like him even works at the historic site. Who on earth is this guy? Nick doesn’t want to lose the connection they have made before they truly get to explore it. The answer, when it comes, will have Nick questioning his ideas about reality.
A Haunted Loveby J. M. Snyder is a different kind of a ghost story that tangles the two main characters up in an impossible relationship. Nick may get teased by his coworkers about the colony being haunted, but he knows very well that David is as real as he is and that he would have no reason to lie about the fact that he works there. The two are sweet together, searching for each other by day and coming together by night, both equally confused by the situation they are in but wanting very much to be together. We watch Nick struggle to come to grips with what he believes is going on, and because the story has involved us in his thoughts from the beginning, we are equally involved in the discovery process. Overall this is a sweet story and well worth the read for those who love a ghost story.
