Breaking Faith
Brett Derwent has big plans. He is going to medical school and leaving his hometown far behind him. He can’t wait to get his college life started, a life where he can be free to be himself. But, even the best laid plans can change and when Brett meets Tommy Hawks his life goes awry. Tommy is everything that Brett wants in a boyfriend and he falls hard and fast, but all is not what it seems. Tommy has deep secrets and when Tommy’s father is found dead Brett has to decide how truly and deeply he feels for Tommy.
I picked up Breaking Faith thinking that the blurb sounded good. I hadn’t read anything from this author before and so, taking a deep breath, I dove into the story. I’m so glad I took a chance on this author and this book. Breaking Faith started out to be a kind of coming of age story. Brett begins his voyage of self discovery as a gay man with Tommy and it is sweet and tender. But, underneath this love story is a much deeper, darker plot line that, at times, had me alternately crying and raging at the characters and the fates. A tale of child abuse, physical, mental, and emotional, the toll it can take on an individual and the co-dependency that can develop because of it is true story here. How it affects those around it and those that become involved in it was presented in such a way as to involve the reader in the story. I will say that there was a bit of disbelief on my part at the ending, not because I didn’t like it but because I really don’t have the faith in people that author M. King has imbued in her characters, even they find at times that it is a faith that is difficult to maintain as evidenced by the title Breaking Faith. While there were a few technical difficulties in the story they in no way detracted from my enjoyment, this was wholly due to the depth of emotion that Ms. King has instilled into her work. This is definitely a 5 Angel novel!
