See No Evil, My Pretty Lady
It is 1888 London. Jack the Ripper is on the loose, attacking women in the East End, spreading panic and fear throughout the city. His activities become more than newspaper headlines to Dorcy Edwards when, newly arrived from the country, she rejects her wealthy employer's advances and finds him dead the next morning, stabbed in the chest, Jack-the-Ripper style. As she flees from the house into the fog, Dorcy is grabbed by a knife wielding man and barely manages to escape his clutches.
At least she thinks she has escaped. Her deceased employer's son arrives on her doorstep, his hands covered by leather gloves. His sleeves pull up and Dorcy sees scratches on Gareth Davenport's wrists. She had scratched her attacker. It appears to be an open and shut case until Dorcy uncovers that other people have as much or even more motive than Gareth.
See No Evil, My Pretty Lady is a wonderful, well-crafted mystery. The senior Mr. Davenport is the perfect murder mystery victim. Everyone has a reason to hate him. Even the heroine, Dorcy, is a suspect. The author, Miss Mae, kept me guessing. I was convinced I had solved the murder at least a half dozen times, only to have a plot twist on the next page scuttle my theories. In the end, the murderer was deliciously obvious. However, during the story, I had no clue.
